Unconditional Love By J. Baldwin - 1138 Words
Unconditional Love The period of the 1950s in Harlem, New York, was an embodiment of despair, poverty, and crime. Such conditions pushed people to live in unsupportable atmosphere of distemper and circulation of drugs. Because of these awful obstacles, people developed bitter sense of abandonment and disappointment. However, despite all these challenges, there is always room for hope. This hope is deeply rooted in the blood ties and such an essential thing as love. Sonnyââ¬â¢s Blues by J. Baldwin is a perfect example of it. James Baldwinââ¬â¢s focus of unconditional love is shown through the narratorââ¬â¢s real life experiences of the struggles of growing up with Sonny in Harlem New York in the 1950s. On the pages of this story, the narrator tells about his challenges to restore relationships with his brother. The main characters and their importance are tightly connected to the outcome of the story. Without Gracieââ¬â¢s death, the narrator may never have reconnected with his brother, and h is motherââ¬â¢s final wish may have never been lived up to. Unfortunately, little Gracie died because of polio. The suspense in this story is the death of the narratorââ¬â¢s daughter, Gracie. That is why she becomes the reason to remember how family ties are important. The central character of the story is the narrator. The conflict of the story is that the narratorââ¬â¢s brother, Sonny, is in jail for taking and selling heroin (Baldwin, 489). The narrator displays his brother Sonny, who is also antagonist of theShow MoreRelatedManagement Course: MbaâËâ10 General Management215330 Words à |à 862 Pagesimportance of behavioral or human relations training became even clearer to its supporters after another series of experimentsââ¬âthe bank wiring room experiments. Does the recoupment test introduced in the Liggett vs. Brown Williamson case make predatory pricing law suits more likely, less likely, or equally likely compared to the old Areeda-Turner test? ____less likely _____ 42. The courts have held that predatory pricing cases require a showing that a firm has reduced price below its costs. What is the relevant cost for this criterion? ________average Variable cost (AVC) _________ 3. Many economists have used the concept of ââ¬Å"barriers to entryâ⬠in their criticism of predatory pricing antitrust laws. Explain their criticism. __Predatory pricing only makes sense if the firm can raise prices after using it to attain a monopoly and if it has barriers to entry that can keep new competitors out. However, if it had such barriers in the first place, it would probably not need predatory pricing. Predatory pricing does not give the firm the required barriers to entry, unless one envisions constant predatory pricing. But constant predatory pricing is nothing more than price competition. ___ 44. During the 1930s, large American cigarette companies faced competition from small cigarette companies offering new brands at 10 cents per pack. How did they meet and deal with this competition? __They resorted to predatory pricing, i. e. , they dramatically reduced their prices (in some case to below costs) in order to drive the new competitors out of the market ___ 45. Did the response of the ââ¬Å"Big Fourâ⬠tobacco companies to the challenge from the new 10-cent brands competitors in the early 1930s work? Why or why not? _the Four Majors were unable to drive out two competitors created by the 10-cent brand episode. They had a 91 percent market share before the episode and only a 69 percent market share after. Two formidable competitors emerged and the Big Four became the Big Six__ 46. What was the verdict in the 10-cent brands cigarette case? _____the major cigarette companies were found guilty of violating the antitrust laws______ 47. Was predatory pricing the governmentââ¬â¢s primary allegation against the majors in the 10-cent brands cigarette price wars? If not, what was the primary complaint? _the court focused primarily on the collusion among the majors to fix prices__ 48. What was the courtââ¬â¢s remedy in the 10-cent brands cigarette case? ___the court fined the guilty parties and restricted their ability to communicate and work together ____ 49. Why do most economists argue that antitrust laws prohibiting predatory pricing are actually anti-competitive? ____ Most economists argue that antitrust laws prohibiting predatory pricing are actually anti-competitive because any firm that lowers itââ¬â¢s prices to compete against itââ¬â¢s market competitors are susceptible to being charged with predatory pricing, even when no such intent probably exists. Furthermore, filing an antitrust lawsuit related to predatory pricing is often abused and a convenient way for businesses to compete with their competitors without matching their competitors price cutting especially since antitrust laws concerning predatory pricing are sometimes difficult to distinguish from predatory pricing, market competition, and competitive business practices. __ 50. Suppose there are five (5) firms in an industry with the following market shares: 15%, 20%, 2%. 45%, and 18%. What is the Herfindahl Index for this industry? _______2,978_______. According to the 1992 Horizontal Merger Guidelines, how would this industry be classified? ___It would be classified as a ââ¬Ëhighly concentratedââ¬â¢ market. _____ 51. Ceteris paribus, would a merger that raised the Herfindahl index from 1900 to 1941 be likely to trigger interest by antitrust regulators? Why or why not? ____No, because while this market would be classified as ââ¬Ëhighly concentrated,ââ¬â¢ the m erger does not raise the HHI by more than 50 points and will therefore not trigger the interest of regulators. ___ 52. Ceteris paribus, would a merger that raised the Herfindahl index from 750 to 985 be likely to trigger interest by antitrust regulators? Why or why not? ___No, because a market with a Herfindahl Index below 1,000 is considered to be ââ¬Ëunconcentratedââ¬â¢ and mergers in unconcentrated markets are unlikely to be challenged by regulators. _____ 53. Tying contracts are illegal per se under American antitrust laws. However, enforcing their illegal per se status has proven to be very difficult. What is the problem here? ___While tying contracts are illegal per se under antitrust law, there seems to be no way of getting around some tying during the course of routine business, e. g. , left shoes tied to right shoes, etc. This therefore introduces the element of intent and competitive consequences; two features that are not supposed to figure into illegal per se allegations. Currently, this problem is most pronounced in the practice of ââ¬Ëbundlingââ¬â¢ in high tech markets. ____ 54. In the YouTube video on Monopoly, what did Milton Friedman think was the primary cause of longer-lasting monopolies? ____government market restrictions ___________ 55. In the YouTube video on Monopoly, what did Milton Friedman think was the very best policy for dealing with monopolies and market power? ____free trade or measures to make trade more free and open _______ 56. In the YouTube video on Monopoly, Milton Friedman never mentioned or discussed Smithââ¬â¢s Formula. However, based on his comments, what do think his position would have been on our 200-year old question? __Friedman would definitely argue that markets had, if government leaves them alone, sufficient competition to make Smithââ¬â¢s Formula societyââ¬â¢s primary line of defense against monopoly abuse. __ 57. Cross-Cutting Blood Brothers Essay We decided to begin our scene 1 with young Mickey and Eddie meeting for the first time. Mickey says Gis a sweet, which shows that Mickey is from a lower class as he doesnt pronunciate his words properly, also it shows Mickeys childish behaviour as he does not use manners in comaprison to Eddie who replies All right using correct diction. We chose to start with this specific line because it shows the audience how the friendship started. We then ended the scene by Mickey asking Eddie to be Blood Brothers? We ended the scene with a freeze frame of Mickey and Eddie shaking hands as to agree to be blood brothers. This leaves the audience in a happy, content mood. Dramatic irony was present in this scene as the audience realise that Mickey and Eddie are birth twins so do infact share the same blood, the audience may find it humerous. If the students answer to annual sports participation was not equal to the exact number of sport events stated, the students questionnaire was considered invalid. A total of 8.9% were discarded in relation to this. The survey was overall considered to be reliable. A week of school in Singapore consisted of five days and Saturday morning. On each Saturday morning, the schools doing this study would complete the Physical Activity and Exercise Questionnaire. The students underwent a physical assessment of blood pressure, height, and weight. They were assessed for body composition using a skinfold caliper, tape measure, and bone vernier. They then had a blood sample taken for analysis of their bloods chemistry. This occurred after the written completion of background information. Here are some of the results of these tests. As you may recall, height was recorded. Height was greater for each age group until boys reached the age of 15, and girls reached the age of 14. Weight also kept increasing until age 16 for boys and age 14. This demonstrates that the students had basically reached the end of their growth spurts. As for body fat readings, boys body fat percentage was higher from age 6 to 9, then stayed consistent up to about age 14, then had lower body fat readings after the age of 15. For girls, body fat was relatively the same for girls 6 to 12. Greater body fat was recorded between ages 12 and 15 and about the same body fat readings thereafter. Body fat corresponded with boys and girls to how much physical activity they participated in. As for the physical activity and exercise questionnaire, boys were generally more vigorously active than girls. Furthermore, boys were more physically active than were girls at each age group from age 10 to 17. However, girls documented that they were active in annual sports at age 13 more than boys were. However, afterwards, boys annual participation in competitive sports was higher than that of the girls. As for the blood tests, no discrete differences were noted between the genders nor between different age groups. REACTION: Although the article seemed difficult to follow at times, there was some very good information in it. There were a bountiful number of charts in the article which helped to understand the material that was not very well explained. After reading the title I thought that the youth in Singapore were under risk of coronary problems. After reading the article, you discovered that there were no students with an overly dangerous blood pressure level. I think it would be nice to do studies like this in the U.S. .u23346925ab28d6868549c41f26dac234 , .u23346925ab28d6868549c41f26dac234 .postImageUrl , .u23346925ab28d6868549c41f26dac234 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u23346925ab28d6868549c41f26dac234 , .u23346925ab28d6868549c41f26dac234:hover , .u23346925ab28d6868549c41f26dac234:visited , .u23346925ab28d6868549c41f26dac234:active { border:0!important; } .u23346925ab28d6868549c41f26dac234 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u23346925ab28d6868549c41f26dac234 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u23346925ab28d6868549c41f26dac234:active , .u23346925ab28d6868549c41f26dac234:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u23346925ab28d6868549c41f26dac234 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u23346925ab28d6868549c41f26dac234 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u23346925ab28d6868549c41f26dac234 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u23346925ab28d6868549c41f26dac234 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u23346925ab28d6868549c41f26dac234:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u23346925ab28d6868549c41f26dac234 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u23346925ab28d6868549c41f26dac234 .u23346925ab28d6868549c41f26dac234-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u23346925ab28d6868549c41f26dac234:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Human Rights in china Essay I know that there are many overweight teens and need to get on an exercise and diet plan. Written Case Analysis Essay Perdue Farms sought not to just provide quality chicken to their customers, but to exceed their customers expectations. Simply put, the superior quality of their product differentiated their brand from that of any other chicken on the market (Daft, 2010, p. 41). However, as the market grew and competitors also improved the quality of their product the degree to which this differentiated Perdue in the marketplace decreased and it became clear that quality was no longer enough (p. 51). Perdue, recognizing this, put a new focus on customer service by working toward becoming indispensible to the customer by giving them what they want, where and when they want it (p. 51). This lofty goal forces Perdue to perform what is turning out to be a precarious balancing act between productivity and quality and their current organizational structure may be compounding the problem further. Having undergone at least one major organizational shift, Perdue Farms is always seeking ways to improve their overall efficiency and effectiveness. Initially, their extremely vertical hierarchy kept decision making in the hands of topmost management (Daft, 2010, p. 44). Employees were expected to do what the jobs they were assigned and do them well. As the industry grew though so did Perdue Farms. After considerable expansion and a number of acquisitions in the 1980s the company sought to decentralize its operations by creating several business units that would be responsible for their own operations. The resulting inefficiencies caused by duplication and increased administrative costs forced the company to refocus their efforts on efficiency and improving communication throughout the company while still keeping quality as their number one goal. (p. 43) With decentralization employees began to become more involved in decision making process (p. 44). Despite this decentralization, to day Perdue still maintains a very vertical hierarchy in order to maintain absolute control (p. 46) because quality is still their main concern. Instead they maintain complete control of the process, from creating their own feed and growing their own stock, to processing and transporting the final product. This ensures that no resources are wasted, nor are shortcuts taken that might compromise the quality of the chicken. (Daft, 2010, pp. 45-46) As the regional and global market for chicken grows however, maintaining these operations becomes inherently more difficult and new issues surface with the increased production. With chicken being the most popular meat in the United States and quickly gaining similar popularity around the world Perdue Farms and other chicken producers are working hard to keep up with demand. The short shelf-life of fresh chicken makes the job of forecasting how many chickens to grow to meet demand 18 months later vital and difficult. Failure to forecast correctly could result in detrimental shortages or overages that may cost Perdue more than just money, but major contracts with vendors. (Daft, 2010, p. 49) Demand is not the only difficulty Perdue is facing however, for as production increases to meet demand so do environmental and safety issues. Increased workloads and demands for absolute efficiency are going to take their toll on workers and increased production is going to ultimately have an impact on the environment. Perdue has, for the most part, maintained a very proactive stance on these issues by creating different committees and processes to improve working conditions and lessen environmental impact. While these programs appear successful and some of the changes have resulted in additional revenue for Perdue, such as selling waste products as manure, the overall costs for these programs have been significant. (Daft, 2010, pp. 46-47) Furthermore, some experts do not feel these measures are enough and are calling for conservation measures that would decrease the number of chickens allowed in a chicken house or force house to close for a period of time each year which could ultim ately decrease production and efficiency at Perdue (pp. 48-49). Beyond any governmental control that might negatively affect Perdue these issues may also negatively impact consumer perception. With environmental and animal activists shouting, stories of inhumane conditions and chicken coop protests littering the headlines (Daft, 2010, p. 46) Perdue has to work hard to maintain their customers trust (p. 49) as this trust is an important part of their new differentiation model (p. 51). Perdues customers have to believe that the chicken they purchase is not only of the highest quality, but trust that it achieved that quality a way that they feel comfortable with. It is only once the customer trusts that what they are purchasing is indeed what they truly want, that the rest falls into place. Unfortunately, as the market grows and Perdue increases production to meet demand the opportunity to lose face with already established customers and potential new ones also increases. Perdues extremely vertical structure puts those at the top of the hierarchy in the decision making roles. While the overall organization is diversified the subdivisions of the company sport tightly vertical hierarchies which, according to our text, help keep Perdue in control of every aspect of production. It is this utter need for control that may derail Perdues efforts. While a very vertical hierarchy worked well for Perdue when it was a smaller company, many things about the company and its external environments have changed. Initially, workers were unskilled and ill-educated. That is changing as those in management hold degrees and Perdue offers educational opportunities to its employees. Also, as mentioned before, Perdue can no longer compete only on the premise of quality, but must differentiate the brand in another way and thus change their practices to best exemplify these new goals. Because Perdue wishes to distinguish itself from its competitors based on exceptional customer service they must create a differentiation strategy (Daft, 2010, p. 67). As noted earlier, Perdue wishes to become so easy to do business with that their customers would simply have no reason to go elsewhere. They further explain how they are going to do this by stating that they wish to be indispensible to the customer providing what they need, when and where they need it. (p. 51) To do this Perdue must be able to forecast what their customers want and when they will want them, then get them to the location they need them at in a timely manner. According to Richard Daft this type of innovation requires creative employees (p. 68) working in a flexible environment that encourages learning and discovery (p. 73). Perdues current vertical structure may stifle the fluidity necessary to allow for this innovation. While a more chaotic organizational type would not likely be a good fit for Perdue o verall, adapting the appropriate subdivisions into a more fluid mechanism with a flatter hierarchy would likely improve communication, creativity, and flexibility (p. 31) all of which would better support Perdues new goal set. Implementing this flatter hierarchy, but to a lesser extent, throughout the company could also go a long way in further improving working conditions without increasing the already high costs. While management and researchers may mean well when they look and how processes can be improved for safety or efficiency reasons, they do not always have all of the data since they do not work in those positions. It is the actual worker who performs these tasks daily that has the greatest understanding of their function and, when empowered to do so, a likely candidate to offer innovative solutions to current problems (Daft, 2010, p. 34). As suggested by Daft, employees must be rewarded for their creativity and risk-taking (p. 72) rather than simply expected to continue to do only what they are told. Rather they should be encouraged to search for solutions to the problems they encounter each day. Furthermore, to help keep Perdue competitive and better support their differentiation strategy they should consider building relationships outside of their customers such as Wyeth Pharmaceuticals did with Accenture (Daft, 2010, p. 89). This type of relationship would allow Perdue to focus on what it knows how to do best, produce quality chickens, while allowing another company to use its talents and resources to improve Perdues efficiency in areas they may not be as comfortable in. However, because Perdue is steadfast about maintaining control of every aspect of production this would be a difficult move that would require a great amount of trust in any company they decided to work with. Therefore, selecting those areas that do not directly relate to production would be the most feasible such as research and development regarding environmental impact, employee education and benefits, and administrative functions. These steps would create a more flexible and fluid company. This flexibility would serve Perdue well and make it easier for them to change proactivity with the growing market. This ability to change and adapt is an absolute necessity for Perdue given the growing competitiveness of the market and their new focus on customer service. Without these changes, Perdues undying focus on quality could potentially become lost as their drive to keep up with market demands increases. By creating a more collaborative and innovative environment now while their focus is still clear they will be able to better maneuver to achieve their goals while still maintaining the values instilled by their founder, Arthur W. Perdue.

Womens Economic Role In WWII essays
Women's Economic Role In WWII essays Coming only 21 years after the war to end all wars, World War II plunged the United States into yet another worldwide conflict. This brought significant changes to everyone's lives, especially those of American women. Until the 1940's, women usually got married at a young age. They did housework and took care of their children while their husbands went to work to support the family. In fact, during the depression, the federal government joined with local government, school boards, and private business to exclude married women from the work force (Woloch 301). All of this changed forever with the onset of World War II, which opened numerous opportunities for women. During the Depression years of the 1930's, many changes took place. Men were losing their jobs, and family life was severely stressed. "Middle class families had a sudden decline in status. In such families, wives often moved in to fill a power vacuum" (Woloch 285). "Contradictory pressures" were brought to bear upon women wage earners (Woloch 287). "Public attitudes urged them not to work, but economic circumstances both spurred wage labor and in some instances made jobs available" (Woloch 287). While there was significant job loss suffered by both men and women during these years, due to the "segregated occupational patterns" of women's jobs and the fact that "men did not seek 'women's work,'" women were "protected to an extent" by a division of labor within the work force (Woloch 287). While many women maintained jobs, employment in some cases was very difficult. Wages were low and working conditions were unpredictable with "layoffs or speed-ups" (Woloch 288). While "Fra nces Perkins sat as Secretary of Labor in Franklin Roosevelt's cabinet, massive male unemployment brought forth demands that married women be dismissed from jobs in order to spread the work" (Janeway x). At about this same time, the National Recovery Administration permitted lower minimum w...

Human resources Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words - 1
Human resources - Essay Example It is a continuous process of methodical design to achieve optimum use of organizationââ¬â¢s human resources (Ree &à French, 2010, p. 121). The aim of this study is to examine the implementation of human resource planning by the organizations. In order to achieve the organizational goals of labour requirements, the organization requires effective human resource planning. However, most of the organizations lack effective programmes on human resource planning to determine their recruitment and hiring practices. Therefore, human resource planning ensures the success of the organization by helping it to acquire the right labour force in the right numbers to match available jobs. However, some organizations fail to implement human resource planning for the following reasons; In order for the organization to have effective manpower planning, they must forecast the future demand for workforce. They can achieve this through trends analysis by studying the demand of some previous years and project the same in the future (Ree &à French, 2010). However, the demand and supply of labour is affected by economic conditions such as recession and boom periods. Such unpredictable economic conditions affect the capacity of the organizations to conduct effective resource planning (Kew &à Stredwick, 2010, p. 113). Organizations incur much expense to conduct human resource planning (Kew &à Stredwick, 2010). This is because almost all personnel must be involved in making a projection in order to achieve the reliable result. However, considering most organizations are small in size they cannot afford the cost of carrying out market research to obtain data for effective market trend analysis and predict the future demand for workforce. Instead of matching present and future labour requirements of organization, they acquire workers whenever the need arises and will downsize the workforce in case of fall in demand due to changes in

Truth in Superstitions Essay Example for Free
Truth in Superstitions Essay There are some people who believe in superstitions. They would follow certain ââ¬Å"rulesâ⬠that most of the time may make no sense. Theyââ¬â¢ll just say you that it is bad luck to do certain things. So what is the basis of these beliefs? Superstitions are beliefs that one event leads to the cause of another event without any physical process linking them. Oftentimes these were just based on events that happened by chance or coincidence. Others may just happen to be repetitious. Yet still others are just made by some people just for the heck of it, concluding something that isnââ¬â¢t scientifically proven. Though superstitions do have a basis, most of the reasons are forgotten but are still followed just because it became a tradition or it became customary. Some superstitions are linked with religion. A good example would be that it isnââ¬â¢t good to walk under a ladder. This may have an obvious reason that it might cause an accident: hitting yourself with the ladder or that something might fall on you. Aside from this, it also came from the ladder forming a triangle with the wall and ground. This triangle represents the Trinity and by crossing the space in between may mean violating the Trinity. Also, the belief of breaking a mirror would yield bad luck. This may be based on the belief of spiritualism. It was once believed that mirrors reflect oneââ¬â¢s soul and that breaking it may mean destroying oneââ¬â¢s soul. Other superstitions may be reasonable in the olden times and impractical at the present. Some examples would include the prohibition of cutting oneââ¬â¢s nails at night. Before, there was no electricity and people only rely on the moonlight. Cutting oneââ¬â¢s nails during that time would have a risk in cutting oneââ¬â¢s fingers, especially when using a knife or blade as they donââ¬â¢t have those fancy nail cutters that we have now today. Some of the real reasons of derivation are also forgotten. The old would give random reasons that when you think about it, doesnââ¬â¢t give a cause-effect relationship. Some would even say because it was said by the elders and was passed from generation to generation. So knowing these origins, now what are the advantages and disadvantages of being superstitious or following the traditions? First, the advantages or the good points at least would be that one would have a sort of tradition or ritual to follow. It may also add colour to life. As what Johann Wolfgang von Goethe said, ââ¬Å"Superstition is the poetry of lifeâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ Believing other superstitions like wearing a lucky charm will not necessarily give you good luck but it somehow conditions your mind that you ar e lucky and everything will be fine. By conditioning your mind to this thinking, it will boost your confidence as this is what most people lack. They are capable of doing something but they doubt they are able. Also, some may also avoid accidents to happen as the case of crossing the ladder. They also organize oneââ¬â¢s life as they create certain patterns. Some superstitions were made from experience and may be practical to us still. Disadvantage may include that it gives a kind of restriction to those who really observed them. They also waste time. Some of the superstition would also let you miss an opportunity to help others. An example would be the tale that one shouldnââ¬â¢t bring out money once itââ¬â¢s already nighttime. With all these superstitions, knowing them all and following them is impossible. Some superstitions may be beneficial but most are just impractical in the modern times. They may even limit and restrict us when we could have done more.

Discuss the idea of innocence and experience in Mansfieldââ¬â¢s work. Essay
Discuss the idea of innocence and experience in Mansfieldââ¬â¢s work. The ideas of innocence and experience are frequent themes that come up in Mansfieldââ¬â¢s stories. These ideas often come across in themes such as loss of sexual innocence ââ¬â ââ¬ËThe Little Governessââ¬â¢; loss of innocence through awareness of mortality and death ââ¬â ââ¬ËThe Garden Partyââ¬â¢, ââ¬ËHer First Ballââ¬â¢. Themes of aging and gaining of experience as time passes are also suggested. The woman in ââ¬ËThe Woman at the Storeââ¬â¢, we can that she has already lost her innocence, whereas in the other stories we see the point where characters have lost their innocence. ââ¬ËThe Little Governessââ¬â¢ is about a young, inexperienced and vulnerable woman who gets sexually exploited in a ââ¬Å"world full of old men with twitching kneesâ⬠. Connotations of the title already suggest that she is a naà ¯ve girl with no experience. She is described as the ââ¬Å"littleâ⬠governess ââ¬â suggesting she is a naà ¯ve, innocent, vulnerable girl who is diminutive with no experience. Also, people that became governesses in those times were usually bright but inexperienced middle class women. The typical language she uses sets up her innocence and naivety. Use of German and French dialect expressions highlights the novelty of European travel for the governess and her innocence and naivety .She is described as ââ¬Å"quite white, with big round eyesâ⬠, ââ¬Å"long lashesâ⬠, ââ¬Å"soft beautyâ⬠, these descriptions again emphasize how childish and innocent she is. Use of foreshadowing is used to develop themes and is quite obvious regarding loss of sexual innocence. There is foreshadowing at the start ââ¬Å"I always tell my girls that itââ¬â¢s better to mistrust people at first rather than trust themâ⬠, this sets up the atmosphere and giv... ...body suggests she may be envious of him, as he no longer has to worry about anything ââ¬Å"What did garden partiesâ⬠¦matter to him? He was far from all those thingsâ⬠. It may also suggest her childish inability to accept the finality of death and wants to view it as sleep ââ¬Å"sleeping so soundlyâ⬠. At this point, Laura has a partial realisation of deathââ¬â¢s seriousness. She sees the reality of death, but is unsure of what to do with her new knowledge. The ideas of innocence and experience are reoccurring themes throughout Mansfieldââ¬â¢s stories. We come to realize that human emotion and experience is universal, regardless of class distinction. We cannot escape death due to our mortality, thus we must all accept it. Everyone grows to become more experienced over time even though Mansfield sees the loss of innocence and the gain of new experience as a negative process.

Altria’s Contingent Liabilities
Altria Group is the parent of Philip Morris USA Inc. and John Middleton, Inc. , which produces and sell cigarettes and other tobacco products. Altria also owns Philip Morris Capital Corp, which maintains a portfolio of finance leases. On March 30, 2007, Altria Group distributed all of its remaining interest in Kraft Foods Inc. to its stockholders. It also completed the spin-off of its subsidiary Philip Morris International Inc. As of Dec. 31, Altria declared $57,211,000,000 in total assets, and debts of $38,657,000,000. A mounts owed by Altria's consumer products units total $33,054,000,000, with $17,782,000,000 constituting as current debts. Accordign to its balance sheet, Altria's liabilities include short-term borrowings; accrued liabilities for marketing, taxes, employment costs, and settlement charges; dividends payable, accrued pension and healthcare costs, and long-term debt. It is Altria's obligation to report all liabilities in its balance sheet in accordance with the accounting principles generally accepted in the United States (U. S. GAAP). For example, if Philip Morris obtains a EUR1. 5 billion, 364-day term loan, expiring Dec. 2, 2008, from Bank of America, it is expected to list in its balance sheet that it has debts of EUR1. 5 billion on account of the term loan. If Bank of America asserts that an additional EUR500 million is due on the term loan due to Philip Morris' violations of its covenant that Philip Morris should limit allowed debt expenditures, but Phillip Morris disputes the claim, Philip Morris need not include BofA's claim in its balance sheet. BofA's claim will still be subject to arbitration or litigation, and courts may rule in favour of Philip Morris. Hence, Altria does not disclose these types of events in its balance sheet. Altria, however, has fiduciary duties to disclose to shareholders all potential liabilities that may become actual liabilities in the future. These include liabilities that are contingent, disputed or un-liquidated. For Atria's case, some of these liabilities will likely include pending lawsuits filed against the company. Pending lawsuits are subject to trial, may be sent to appeal after a ruling is served, may result to settlement between parties, may end up being dismissed, or may end up with monetary judgment, either substantial sums or de minimis amounts, against the defendant. Because of the varied possible outcomes, Atria maybe unable to provide reasonable estimates on the debts they may incur as a result of these lawsuits. Regardless, shareholders have to be aware of the potential losses they may incur as a result of these contingencies. Investors also have to be aware of potential risks the company is facing. Hence, contingencies and otherà potential liabilities are listed as footnotes to financial statements. In its Annual Report, Altria discussed contingencies to its financial statements. It stated that legal proceedings are pending or threatened in various U. S. and foreign jurisdictions against Altria and its subsidiaries on account of tobacco-related issues. However, it admitted that its management is unable to estimate the possible loss that could arise from an unfavorable outcome of any of these cases. Accordingly, Altria has not provided any amounts in its financial statements for unfavourable outcomes of pending litigations. For tobacco-related lawsuits that have been resolved through settlements, Altria included these items in its balance sheet because its liabilities on account of those disputes have already been determined. For example, Altria has stated settlement payments it owes on account of the Master Settlement Agreement reached by PM USA with 46 states and other governments for health care cost recovery and other claims. Strategic Management Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 3000 words
Strategic Management - Research Paper Example Strategic management plays a significant role in the growth and competitiveness of any organisation. British Airways in order to maintain its competitiveness in the existing contemporary global business environment requires identifying the need for strategic change. In order to successfully cope up with the changing global environment as well as consumer demand, an organisation like British Airways requires assessing their external environmental factors. In the process of undertaking organisational change, the support and constructive approach of the management plays a key part. Thus, in order to sustain its position in among the tough competitive global market BA requires performing and managing changes according to the need of the hour. Therefore, the study will look to evaluate need for strategic change for British Airways and the method by which the organisation should look to realign with respect to its external environment. ... pects which can be recognized for BA in the process of strategic change are the need for providing customer satisfaction which had seen a decline and also make substantial technological advancements which will enable them to attract as well as retain consumers.
